Steve Cohen’s stated goal is to win championships, but he also wanted to improve his team’s relationship with New York Mets fans, the faith in the Mets organization, and the atmosphere at Citi Field. By bringing stability to the front office with David Stearns, stability to the dugout with Carlos Mendoza and showing everyone that he is willing to be aggressive in either acquiring stars or prospects, he was well on his way to accomplishing these things even BEFORE the Mets turned this rebuilding season around back in May.
Yes, it is a bummer when you get to the NLCS and don’t advance. And yes, it kind of sucks for Mets fans that their cross-town rivals made it to the World Series. However, big picture, it’s all good in Queens. They created great memories for their fans, cultivated new ones, and now have an extra couple of weeks to work on their off-season strategy (which probably includes making an historic offer to a certain Scott Boras pending free agent who will be playing in the World Series).
