The New York Rangers President and General Manager Chris Drury got off to an early start when he traded his captain Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks on December 6th. By the time the deadline bell tolled, Drury made 8 deals with 7 teams. He traded 9 players and one pick in exchange for 10 players and 5 picks. You can review all the trades here.

Did Drury want to change the complexion of last year’s President Trophy winning team? The answer to that question was an emphatic yes. Drury carefully walked the line between buying and selling. The Rangers, who are currently one point out of a playoff spot with 20 games remaining, are still competing this year to make it into the tournament. Plus, they now have a new leader in JT Miller, more stability on the backend, more picks in the cupboard and more cap space to make moves in the summer.

Drury didn’t have a pretty start to this season. He bungled the Barclay Goodrow and Jacob Trouba situations, and his infamously “leaked memo” clearly backfired. However, at the end of the day, the Rangers are in a better situation now than they were on opening night.
