New York hosted the NFL Draft for 50 consecutive years from 1965 through 2014. Since then, the NFL has taken it out on tour. Last year in Detroit, an estimated 775,000 people attended the 3-day event. This year, the NFL moves to a smaller Midwest city, with 240,000 folks expected to attend in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Each year the draft generates more and more hype, especially in New York where our local teams seem to have a permanent spot in the top 10. We are now only one week away from the 2025 NFL Draft kicking off at 8p on ESPN (ABC-TV, ESPN2).

To get you ready, we’re going to fire up the draft simulator found on Pro Football Network. The simulator makes all picks, except for the Giants. I will personally be sitting in for Joe Schoen to have that honor.

The First Two Picks

  • Tennessee Titans select Cam Ward, QB, Miami (FL)
  • Cleveland Browns select Travis Hunter, WR/CB, Colorado

The Giants Are On The Clock
In my role as Giants GM, I had determined that the only way we would trade out of #3 is if we received an absolute, Jimmy Johnson chart-busting trade offer. That never arrived, so went ahead and selected the best pass rusher in this draft.

  1. New York Giants select Abdul Carter, EDGE, Penn State (3rd overall)

There’s been talk the Giants don’t need another pass rusher, tell that to Defensive Coordinator Shane Bowen who wouldn’t take the smile off his face once this pick was officially announced. It’ll be up to Bowen to integrate Carter into a defensive front that already boasts Dexter Lawrence II, Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux.

  1. New York Giants select Josh Conerly Jr, OT, Oregon (34th overall)
  2. New York Giants select Tyler Shough, QB, Louisville (65th overall)

These two players could go in the bottom of the first round, as many of the popular draft experts have them ranked between 3rd and 6th at their respective positions. For the Giants, this would be the best of all worlds as they strengthen a strength with pick #3 overall, fill a huge need with pick #34, and still select a young QB to redshirt a year behind the veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston.

  1. New York Giants select Elijah Arroyo, TE, Miami (FL) (99th overall)

The TE class is strong, and those same rankings mentioned above generally have Arroyo also ranked 3-6th. One of those players should be available at #99, and we were pleased in our mock to find the Miami TE who broke out in 2024 after being injured much of 2022 and 2023.

  1. New York Giants select DJ Giddens, RB, Kansas State (105th overall)
  2. New York Giants select JJ Pegues, DT, Ole Miss (154th overall)
  3. New York Giants select Xavier Truss, OG, Georgia (219th overall)
  4. New York Giants select Howard Cross III, DT, Notre Dame (246th overall)

In the later rounds we check-off our remaining needs with Giddens, Pegues and Truss. Finally, we couldn’t resist a good story at #246. Howard Cross played 13 seasons as a Giants TE before eventually landing in the Giants’ broadcast booth. The Mara’s are all about family, let’s give his son a chance.
