Once the Jets take the field next Sunday against the Patriots in Foxboro, we will have convinced ourselves that there’s still time left for Davante Adams, Haason Reddick and whomever The Ambassador forces Joe Douglas to acquire this week to make a playoff run. But know this, if the season ended today, the New York Jets would be drafting 5th in the 2025 NFL Draft.
The last time the Jets started a season 2-5 and made the playoffs was in 2002 when HC Herm Edwards made an early season switch at QB from Vinny Testaverde to Chad Pennington. That move sparked the Jets to win 7 of their last 9, winning the division and hosting a home playoff game, two things that have not happened since. Yes, that was 22 years ago.
These last two years were supposed to be different. Injuries decimated last season; this year the mistakes are coming from within. Ill-timed penalties, ill-timed turnovers and IMHO an ill-timed coaching change. As of now they look to be the most over-hyped, underperforming team in recent NFL history, especially considering the hype started with Aaron Rodgers’ acquisition 18 months ago.
The schedule makers finally give the Jets a break with a normal 1p game Sunday against the only team they’ve managed to look good against for 4 quarters. But then they pile on again by forcing the Jets to play another prime-time game 4 days later, on Halloween Night, against the 5-2 Houston Texans. IF they don’t find a way to sweep these two games, the season could be over before the clock strikes November.
Once again, it is late, early for Gang Green.
